What Is an INCI Name? Can Stem Cell-Derived Exosomes Become Cosmetic Ingredients and Form Beauty Products?

What Is an INCI Name?

INCI stands for International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients. Established in 1973, it provides standardized naming for cosmetic ingredients. The names are determined by the International Nomenclature Committee (INC) and published by the Personal Care Products Council (PCPC) in the International Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary & Handbook. INCI name serves as a trusted resource for the cosmetics industry and researchers, helping ensure consumer safety and transparency.

Can Stem Cell-Derived Exosomes Be Cosmetic Ingredients?

Several biotech companies around the world have successfully completed INCI name review and obtained certification for mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes (hMSC-Exos). However, there are significant differences in exosome production methods, so safety evaluations and compliance with local cosmetic registration regulations remain essential before products reach the market. Numerous studies indicate that exosomes can offer multiple benefits, including promoting wound healing and skin repair, reducing inflammation, and enhancing hair growth. Consumers should pay attention to details including: the species (human, plant, or animal), the cell source (tissue types and species), qualified manufacturer, patented processes, experimental data, test reports, and third-party verification. The concentration of exosomes also affects their efficacy, so knowing these factors helps ensure product quality and protect consumer interests.

GWOXI’s Exosomes (YBT®) Have Received INCI Name Certification

In March 2025, GWOXI Stem Cells obtained INCI name certification for “Human Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cell Exosomes” under the tradename YBT®. This designation of “Exosome” is more specific than the generic term “Extracellular Vesicles,” reflecting higher confidence in purity and effectiveness. Our stem cell source fully complies with the clinical standards of the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA), and the secreted exosomes meet international MISEV guidelines. Besides cosmetic applications, GWOXI’s exosomes are also suitable for clinical drug development, meeting pharmaceutical-grade standards. Obtaining the INCI Name from the PCPC represents an important first step toward global ingredient standardization, confirming the safety and efficacy of the raw material. This certification is expected to expand our market reach and has become a key driver of recent orders in our exosome CDMO business.
